Channel drains, soakaways and gullies
Driveway
DrainageHigh Peak & East Cheshire
The High Peak gets more rain than almost anywhere in England, so where the water goes matters as much as what the surface looks like. Apex Surface Group designs and installs driveway and garden drainage across the High Peak and East Cheshire, from channel drains and gullies to soakaways and land drains.
Why Apex
Why drainage comes first
Drainage is part of every driveway and patio we build, not an afterthought. We also fix existing problems: flooding garages, water running into the house from a sloping drive, soggy lawns and puddling patios.
- 01
Designed in, not bolted on
Falls, drains and soakaways are planned at the survey stage so the finished surface never holds water.
- 02
SuDS compliant solutions
Permeable surfacing, soakaways and attenuation keep rainwater on the property and inside planning rules.
- 03
Fixes for existing problems
Water in the garage, a flooded path or a waterlogged lawn usually comes down to one missing drain. We find it and put it right.
- 04
Done with the groundwork
Trenches, pipes and chambers go in while the ground is open, so there is no second dig and no extra cost later.

The process
How we approach drainage
- 01
Survey the water
We look at where the rain falls, where it runs and where it can legally go, then design falls and drains to suit.
- 02
Excavate and lay pipework
Trenches are dug, pipes laid to the right fall and chambers or soakaways built while the ground is open.
- 03
Channels, gullies and covers
Linear channel drains, gullies and inspection covers are set flush with the finished surface.
- 04
Surface laid to a fall
The driveway, path or patio is laid to direct water into the drainage, then tested before we leave.
Pricing
Drainage cost
Drainage is usually a small part of a driveway or patio quote and is itemised so you can see what it covers. Standalone drainage work is priced on the length of run, the number of chambers and the ground conditions.
Fixing drainage at the same time as the surface is always cheaper than coming back to it, which is why we insist on getting it right first time.
- SuDScompliant with front garden rules
- Flush fittedchannels and covers level with the surface
- Testedbefore the job is signed off
Questions
Drainage FAQs
Do I need drainage for a new driveway?
If a new or replacement front driveway is over five square metres and not permeable, the rules require rainwater to drain within your property. A permeable surface like resin bound, or a soakaway or channel drain to a lawn, keeps you compliant.
What is a soakaway?
A soakaway is an underground chamber or crate system that collects rainwater from drains and lets it soak slowly into the ground, rather than sending it to the sewer.
Water runs into my garage from the drive. Can you fix it?
Yes. This is one of the most common problems on sloping plots in the High Peak. A linear channel drain across the garage threshold connected to a gully or soakaway normally solves it.
Can you drain a waterlogged lawn?
Yes. Land drains laid in gravel filled trenches and connected to a soakaway or outfall will dry out a lawn that holds water.
Is drainage included in your driveway quotes?
Yes. Any channel drains, gullies or soakaways the driveway needs are itemised in the written quote, so there is no surprise later.
