Porcelain and natural stone patios
Patio
InstallersHigh Peak & East Cheshire
A good patio is the most used room in the house for half the year. Apex Surface Group designs and installs porcelain, Indian sandstone and traditional flagged patios across the High Peak and East Cheshire, laid level on a full mortar bed so they stay that way.
Why Apex
Why have your patio laid by Apex
We handle the whole job: dig out and sub-base, drainage and falls, steps and retaining walls, lighting ducts and the finished paving, then jointing and sealing. Many of our patios are paired with artificial lawns and new fencing so the whole garden is finished in one visit.
- 01
Porcelain, sandstone or flags
Porcelain for a clean modern finish that never stains, Indian sandstone for warmth and character, or traditional flags to suit older stone houses.
- 02
Laid on a full bed
Every slab is laid on a full mortar bed over a compacted sub-base, not spot bedded, so nothing rocks or sinks.
- 03
Falls and drainage built in
Patios are laid to a fall with channel drains where needed, so water runs away from the house instead of sitting against it.
- 04
Steps, walls and edges
We build the steps, low walls and planters that turn a slab of paving into a proper outdoor room.

The process
How we build a patio
- 01
Design visit and written quote
We measure the garden, talk through paving, layout and levels, and send a fixed written quote with the slabs priced in.
- 02
Dig out and sub-base
The area is excavated and a compacted sub-base laid, with any drainage runs put in at this stage.
- 03
Paving laid on a full bed
Slabs are laid to the agreed pattern on a full mortar bed with consistent joints and the correct fall.
- 04
Jointing, sealing and clean down
Joints are filled with a brush in resin compound, natural stone is sealed if you want it, and the site is left tidy.
Pricing
Patio cost
Patio prices depend on the area, the paving you choose and how much groundwork, drainage and step building is involved. Porcelain costs more per square metre than sandstone but needs no sealing and shrugs off stains.
We quote each patio individually in writing. If you are combining a patio with artificial grass or fencing, pricing the whole garden together usually saves money on access and spoil removal.

Questions
Patios FAQs
Which is better, porcelain or Indian sandstone?
Porcelain is denser, does not stain or fade and needs no sealing, so it suits modern gardens and busy families. Indian sandstone is warmer and more natural looking and costs less, but benefits from sealing. We bring samples so you can see both in your own garden.
How much does a patio cost?
A patio is priced on its size, the paving chosen and the groundwork needed. Steps, walls and drainage add to the cost. We give a fixed written quote after a free visit.
Do you remove the old patio?
Yes. We lift and dispose of old paving, decking or concrete as part of the job using licensed waste carriers.
Will my patio puddle?
Not if it is laid properly. Every patio we build is laid to a fall of at least 1 in 80 away from the house, with channel drains where the levels need them.
How long does a patio take to install?
A typical patio takes three to six days depending on size and whether steps or walls are involved. You can use it as soon as the jointing has set, usually the next day.
